The inaugural event, organized by Next Stop Elmhurst, the merchant organizing program operated by food relief non-profit Queens Together, will run from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, encouraging guests to sample local businesses and culture during a self-guided tour of the neighborhood.
Elmhurst Day encourages guests to catch cultural events taking place throughout the area, advising people to make the Indonesian Food Bazaar at St. James Church’s parish house, which runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and features Indonesian and Burmese dance performances.
Guests are then advised to catch a Snow Lion Dance by Tibetan Sengye dancers Frank D. O’Connor Playground at 2:15 p.m. before a “Blessing of the Wheels and Heels” at 2:30 p.m., which will see local religious leaders bless all road users who use streets in the area.
A Balinese dance performance will take place at 4 p.m. at Moore Homestead Park as part of the IGA Food Bazaar, where guests can find more Indonesian food.
In all, 34 restaurants, markets and food bazaars will be offering special deals and dishes throughout the four-hour period, offering a chance to sample cuisine from Indonesia, Taiwan, Mexico, China, Colombia and many more destinations around the world. Featured restaurants in the event include Northern Dumpling House, Taste Good Malaysian, Happy Stony Noodle and Eim Khao Mun Kai – a Thai restaurant on Broadway.
Guests will receive curated walking maps splitting the neighborhood into five distinct areas, including International Mile (Broadway, between Roosevelt Ave. and Queens Blvd.), Little Thailand Way (Woodside Ave.), the Triangle (Baxter Ave., Broadway, and Roosevelt Ave.), Whitney Avenue, and Corona Avenue.
Queens Together CEO Jonathan Forgash described Elmhurst Day as a “celebration of cultures and local merchants” blending food and cultural performances.
“We invite all of NYC to come out on Saturday, June 6, to enjoy the foods, cultural performances, and beautiful community in this hidden gem of a neighborhood called Elmhurst,” Forgash said in a statement.
U.S. Rep. Grace Meng and Council Member Shekar Krishnan are also expected to give remarks at the event.
