Update on the Grand Slope Staircase Reconstruction Project

Summary

Grand Slope Staircase Project delayed to Sept 2025 despite 90% completion. Frustrated locals urge action via 311 or NYC Parks form. $395K funded by City Council & Mayor.

As of 2/14/25, The Grand Slope Staircase Reconstruction Project has been pushed back yet again… this time with a projected completion date of September, 2025 — even though the renovations have been 90% completed, according to the Parks Department.

Local residents will tell you that it looks 100% complete, and has for several months, yet the site has sat fenced off to the public and untouched by workers since the fall of 2024 — when it was originally expected to be completed. So what is the hold up?

A source close to the project, who wished to remain anonymous, claims it is the city holding up the opening, for unknown reasons, and several people involved are “frustrated.” They say that the only way to get the project moving forward, is to contact 311, or contact the NYC Parks Department via this form.

The more people who file a grievance, the more pressure may be put on the city to move this project along.

The Grand Slope Staircase Reconstruction Project is backed by a total funding of $395,000, with contributions coming from the City Council and the Mayor’s office, was commissioned in November 2021. The design was both assigned and started in that month, with a completion target set for November 2022, which was met on schedule. Following the design, the procurement phase began in November 2022, aiming to conclude by August 2023. However, delays pushed the actual completion to August 2024.

Construction started a month later, in September 2024, and was completed rather quickly. Beyond the repair of the stairs, a good portion of the sidewalk was renovated. The redesign also included tree plantings, two benches, and more lighting.
