The Party City store located at 82-35 Queens Boulevard, a longtime go-to destination for balloons, costumes, and party supplies, has permanently closed its doors, leaving residents and small businesses mourning the loss of a neighborhood staple. The closure is part of the national retailer’s ongoing restructuring efforts following its 2023 bankruptcy filing, which included shuttering underperforming stores amid rising competition from online retailers and shifting consumer habits.
The Elmhurst store served the neighborhood for over two decades. Known for its expansive selection of holiday decorations, birthday party kits, and last-minute essentials, the store was a lifeline for families planning birthdays, quinceañeras, cultural festivals, and school events.
Party City’s financial woes reflect broader challenges in the retail sector. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2023, citing $1.7 billion in debt, supply chain disruptions, and declining foot traffic. While the brand emerged from bankruptcy later that year, it announced plans to close nearly 25% of its 800+ stores nationwide. The Elmhurst closure aligns with this strategy, as brick-and-mortar locations struggle to compete with e-commerce giants like Amazon and budget-friendly dollar stores.
The rise of DIY culture and reusable decorations has also dented demand for single-use party supplies. “People are more cost-conscious and eco-aware now,” said retail analyst Jessica Lee. “They’re buying fewer disposable items and opting for digital invites or handmade decor.”
