Awang Kitchen stands out in New York City for its authentic, rich, and flavorful dishes that transport diners straight to the heart of Indonesia. While many Indonesian restaurants in the city lean toward Westernized flavors, Awang Kitchen stays true to its roots, offering a genuine culinary journey through its traditional cuisine. Beyond Indonesian favorites, the menu also features a variety of Asian dishes like sushi and bibimbap, ensuring every bite is packed with bold, unforgettable flavors. If you’re craving a taste of Indonesia or exploring diverse Asian flavors, Awang Kitchen delivers an exceptional dining experience.

Why did you choose to open the restaurant in Elmhurst?
Because I live in Elmhurst for around 22 years or 23 years.
Why did you choose this theme, Indonesian fusion?
Because Indonesian is not a lot of people doing in restaurant. So in Elmhurst, only three right now. So it’s potential is a lot.
Is there a big Indonesian community in Elmhurst?
Yeah, Elmhurst has big community.
And you see mostly Indonesian come or people from all background?
In the beginning, it’s mostly like 90% Indonesia. 10% is foreign. Then we had articles in New York Times, Eater, and we got on some television shows and magazines. So, right now, I can say like 60%,
Indonesia, and 40% is neighborhood from the other side, like Manhattan.
Who came up with the recipes?
It’s me, it’s traditional. I can say it’s 90 or 95% is authentic. We have so many islands in Indonesia, but I can cook styles from west to east.
What’s your favorite dish?
My favorite dish is the Basko (or “pregnant meatball” filled with quail egg in soup w/ egg noodle, vermicelli, fried tofu & yu choy).
What do you like best about Elmhurst?
Elmhurst has everything because our community is here, everything is very near. We’ll go to church right there, supermarket right here, everything right here. I love to support Elmhurst.
